Safety Tips

Stay safe when meeting breeders and adopting your new pet

Your Safety is Our Priority

Always meet breeders in safe locations and never send money before seeing the pet in person or via video call.

Important: Breeders on Tails are responsible for the accuracy of their listings. Tails does not independently verify breeder registrations or affiliations at this time.

Before Meeting the Breeder

Request a Video Call

Ask to see the puppy and meet the breeder via video call first. This helps you confirm the pet exists and assess the breeding environment.

Check breeder credentials

Ask for registration details and check with the relevant registry organisation yourself.

Ask Questions

Request health records, vaccination history, parent information, and ask about the breeder's policies on returns and health guarantees.

When Meeting in Person

Meet in a Safe Location

Ideally, visit the breeder's home or facility to see where the puppies are raised. If meeting elsewhere, choose a public location and bring someone with you.

Inspect the Environment

Check that the breeding facility is clean, the animals look healthy and well-cared for, and that the breeder appears knowledgeable and caring.

Trust Your Instincts

If something feels wrong or the breeder is evasive about answering questions, it's okay to walk away. A responsible breeder will welcome your questions.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Requests for Payment Before Meeting

Never send money, deposits, or pay for shipping before seeing the pet in person or via live video call.

Refuses to Show Breeding Facility

Legitimate breeders are proud to show where their animals are raised. Be wary if they won't let you visit or always suggest meeting elsewhere.

No Health Documentation

Responsible breeders provide vaccination records, health certificates, and information about the parents' health history.

Multiple Breeds or "Always Available"

Be cautious of breeders who have many different breeds always available, as this may indicate a puppy mill operation.
